College Access Coordinator—Colorado Department of Higher Education

Summary:

The Academic Affairs division of the Colorado Department of Higher Education is seeking a College Access Coordinator to work under the College Access Challenge Grant (CACG), funded by the US Department of Education. CACG will provide $1.6 million to the state and focuses on higher education access, intervention and college retention of low income students. This grant funding cycle begins on August 14, 2010. CACG funds are renewable on an annual basis for up to five years.

The primary focus for this position will be on high school, middle school, pre-collegiate program and community partner outreach in Southern Colorado, including Colorado Springs, Pueblo, San Luis Valley and Eastern Plains. This position will work with students, parents, school counselors and non-profit organizations. The college access coordinator is expected to maintain a strong working knowledge of college admissions, higher education financing, FAFSA completion, scholarships, financial education, education trends, and coordinate, develop, and deliver presentations and workshops on college financing and access.

Admission Counselor—University of Colorado at Boulder

Summary:

Admission counselors are expected to establish and maintain effective communications with constituents within the University, high schools, community colleges, and other agencies and organizations in order to successfully recruit and enroll an academically superior and diverse student population for the University of Colorado at Boulder. Responsibilities include extensive travel; presenting the university to a variety of audiences; personalized contact with students, parents, and counselors through meetings, phone conversations, and email/written correspondence; and participating in the admission decision process. This admission counselor position will participate in and assist the Office of Admissions' Access and Community Affairs (ACA) team. The ACA team is responsible for developing specific recruitment strategies to increase the enrollment of diverse populations to the CU-Boulder campus. The team seeks and employs a variety of strategies to identify a diverse applicant pool, encouraging them to apply and, if admitted, to confirm and matriculate at the Boulder Campus.

Required Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university prior to the start of employment; a valid driver's license; ability to work well with high school and college age students as well as racially and ethnically diverse populations; excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; strong public speaking skills; excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to work independently as well as with a team; and familiarity with computing. Some evening and weekend work is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in an admission office at a collegiate institution; relevant work in counseling and other student-related activities, or in community organizations, secondary schools and educational agencies.

Salary range is $31,000-33,000 per year and will be commensurate with experience. Associate Director of Admissions—University of Northern Colorado

Summary:

The Office of Admissions at the University of Northern Colorado is accepting applications from qualified candidates for the position of Associate Director of Admissions.

Position Description:

The Associate Director of Admissions position reports directly to the Director of Admissions and is a member of the Office of Admissions leadership team. The Associate Director will assist in providing leadership and oversight of an office that includes twenty-two (22) full time staff, two (2) graduate assistants and fifty (50) student staff. The Associate Director is a member of the Office of Admissions leadership team and will oversee day-to-day operations in the Director's absence. The Associate Director is expected to work collaboratively and strategically to recruit and retain an academically talented and diverse undergraduate student body. It is expected that the individual selected for this role will have a keen ability to provide tactical recommendations to the Director of Admissions regarding specific recruitment strategies to recruit and enroll prospective students. As such, the Associate Director has a strong understanding and proven ability to directly apply the many principles associated with territory management. In this position, the Associate Director will:

  • Supervise twelve admission counselors and two graduate assistants.
  • Meet undergraduate enrollment goals (individual and team) as determined by the University's Enrollment Plan.
  • Work with the Director to develop strategies for inquiry and applicant conversion.
  • Develop recruitment and enrollment plans for specific targeted populations.
  • Manage assigned recruitment territory.
  • Coordinate training and professional develop for all Office of Admissions employees.

Assistant Director of Admissions for Transfer Initiatives—Colorado State University

Summary:

As a key member of the Office of Admissions staff, the Assistant Director will be based in the Denver area to develop and implement recruitment and enrollment programs and activities, primarily with two-year colleges and transfer students in the Denver metropolitan area.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Admissions for Transfer Initiatives, the Assistant Director will provide services to transfer students before and during the admissions/enrollment process; establish productive and collaborative relationships with two-year college and University faculty and advisors; handle difficult and complex transfer student issues; provide liaison with Colorado State University departments and programs to connect students to on-campus resources; participate in regional transfer and education fairs; be the primary contact point for transfer students and two-year college counselors/advisors in the Denver metropolitan area; cross-train with various Colorado State University student services offices to maximize assistance to future transfer students; provide expertise on transfer to Colorado State University for local alumni groups, school districts, civic organizations; coordinate programs or site visits of Colorado State University personnel in the Denver area; and make recommendations to the Associate Director regarding priorities, programs, and activities for the region. The position requires travel and weekend/evening work.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Be the primary contact for transfer students and two-year colleges in the Denver metropolitan area, developing a consistent Colorado State University presence on their campuses.
  • Provide admissions counseling for prospective transfer students and their families; develop expertise to handle complex transfer admissions issues; assist students with accessing transfer advising resources and financial aid and scholarship information in cooperation with Center for Advising and Student Achievement, the Registrar's Office, and the Office of Student Financial Services; provide information to students; refer when appropriate.
  • Represent the University at two-year college transfer programs and other college admissions events.
  • Develop and implement programs and activities targeting diverse transfer student populations.
  • Serve as a member of the Admissions Application Review Committee responsible for rendering admissions decisions on domestic undergraduate applications to the University, developing expertise with transfer student applications.
  • Develop knowledge of transfer advising, credit evaluation (including u.select), and financial aid and scholarships in cooperation with Center for Advising and Student Achievement, the Registrar's Office, and the Office of Student Financial Services; provide information to students; refer when appropriate.
  • Assist Associate director with developing and delivering presentations and programs for constituents in the Denver metropolitan area.
  • Assist in developing and implementing various marketing, recruitment, and yield programs, projects, and other activities as assigned.
  • Assist with other office-wide programs and activities as assigned.
  • Responsible for maintaining a valid Colorado driver's license or access to a licensed driver; own mode of transportation must be available; mileage will be reimbursed per Colorado State University guidelines.

Assistant Director of Recruitment & Retention—Colorado State University

Summary:

The Native American Cultural Center ensures a successful educational experience for students by providing support and services related to recruitment, retention, graduation, and community outreach. The office embraces and encourages a supportive environment based on the traditions and cultures of Native American peoples.

The Native American Cultural Center is part of the Division of Student Affairs, which encompasses a wide array of department services and programs which address the needs of the student body of approximately 25,000. Colorado State University is located in Fort Collins, a city of 137,000, 65 miles north of Denver.

The Office of Admissions provides access and information on the many educational opportunities at Colorado State University. Specific functions of the office include communicating with prospective students, school officials, and their families about CSU's admission criteria and timeline for enrolling at the university; as well as reviewing each undergraduate application holistically and thoroughly. In a typical year, Admissions works with over 60,000 prospective freshman and transfer applicants, and handles over 30,000 applications for undergraduate and graduate admission to Colorado State. This is a large, complex office of over 60 staff, and with a wide array of resources, the office takes pride in not only recruiting students to a strong institution with a Land Grant heritage, but in offering ever-growing outreach efforts to encourage diverse students to continue on to college in general.

Admissions is part of the Division of Enrollment and Access, a group of offices all geared toward improving access to higher education. In addition to the Office of Admissions, Enrollment and Access includes Student Financial Services, the University Registrar, and the Access Center, a series of pre-collegiate programs geared at increasing the number of students from underrepresented backgrounds who enter and eventually graduate from college.

Position Description

The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Native American Cultural Center, is part of the office management team, works closely with students and student groups and is directly responsible for coordinating academic, and cultural programs initiated by the office. Additionally, this position reports jointly to Director of Undergraduate Recruitment in the Office of Admissions, as an Assistant Director-level role involved in a variety of recruitment and outreach activities, and in application file review.

Native American Cultural Center Responsibilities

  • Provide counseling/advising for individual students and student groups in academic, social, career, and cultural areas of concern
  • Coordinate and develop academic and cultural programs that enhance the educational experience, goals, and careers of students (programs include, but are not limited to: Welcome BBQ, Native American Awareness Month, Annual Leadership Retreat, and North Star Peer Mentoring)
  • Develop and support programs that enhance cultural awareness on campus and the surrounding community by working with students, other campus offices, and resources within the community
  • Serve as liaison to Native student organizations and provide support for their programming efforts and leadership development
  • Work collaboratively with other University offices, community agencies, and tribal nations to provide quality services for students

Duties:

Academic Success Advisor—Fort Lewis College

Summary:

The Office of Admission seeks an Academic Success Advisor beginning July 1, 2010. This position is a full-time exempt staff position with medical and retirement benefits.

This position will work with an admission counselor as part of a results-oriented Recruiting-Matriculation-Retention (R-M-R) team for an assigned geographic territory. Each team is responsible for setting recruiting, matriculation, and retention strategies for their territories and for following through with them with freshmen, transfer, returning, and unclassified students.

In the team, the Academic Success Advisor has special responsibilities to assist each new student in creating an academic course schedule for their first semester and to support them in becoming engaged with the campus and academically successful. After the first semester, the Academic Success Advisor plays a secondary role to the faculty advisor in assisting students in re-enrolling for future semesters.

The Academic Success Advisor will approach their students with a whole student approach, taking into account academic progress, leadership and community development, financial issues, and health/wellness concerns.

Therefore, this position has particular responsibility for planning and leading an active multicultural recruitment and enrollment effort for both graduate and undergraduate admissions efforts. While balancing the supervisory, counseling and diversity recruitment duties of the job, the Associate Director will:

  • Meet undergraduate enrollment targets (individual and team) as set forth in the university strategic plan.
  • Work with the Dean to create strategies for inquiry and applicant conversion including social networking, improved communications program, travel, events, marketing and various forms of outreach.
  • Supervise up to three counselors and a student intern including hiring, training, and performance management.
  • Plan and execute national recruiting trips; travel may include up to 5 weeks in the fall and 3 weeks in the spring. Significant time out of the office will be spent in Denver building relationships and working with community-based organizations and schools.
  • Plan and lead an active multicultural recruitment and enrollment effort, and as such, advance and coordinate the involvement of other Admissions and Financial Aid office personnel, current students, faculty, staff and alumni in support of the university's goal to enhance the diversity of the student body.
  • Cultivate relationships with counselors and those who work in access-oriented agencies.
  • Manage a small budget for diversity recruitment.
  • Act as the primary liaison to Marketing and Communications, Student Affairs and Academic Affairs in relation to multicultural admission issues.
  • Manage visiting student program including application processing, course registration, advising and support.
  • Application processing including data entry, communication management, email, IM, and phone follow-up, counseling, conduct admissions interviews and review files.
  • Maintain up-to-date information on Naropa's programs, planning, and policies through attendance at performances and student club meetings, networking with students and colleagues and participation on university committees.
  • Maintain up-to-date information on the admissions/enrollment management field via list-serves, conference attendance, and research with particular attention to the international, transfer, veteran, and returning student fields; particular attention to be paid to Colorado organizations.
  • Assist in general office management.
  • Other duties as needed or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree in any field; Master's preferred.
  • Four years experience in undergraduate admissions and one-two in multicultural affairs.
  • At least three years of supervisory experience including hiring, training and performance management.
  • Knowledge, understanding and experience working with students and families from racial and economic groups underrepresented in higher education.
  • Personal work and willingness to engage with diversity training and the issues of power, privilege and oppression.
  • Knowledge or experience with the complexities of diversity strategies in higher education.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, Explorer and data base entry; experience with Jenzabar CX preferred.
  • Expertise in communication, multi-tasking, organization, negotiation, and public speaking.
  • Ability to accommodate evening and weekend work.
  • Ability to travel up to 8 weeks per year, ability to lift 30lbs box, and valid driver's license; own car preferred.
  • Strong sense of initiative and self-direction; high level of motivation and flexibility; strong work ethic; commitment to teamwork; a positive attitude; sense of humor and service orientation.
  • Prior experience and/or interest in progressive and contemplative education.
  • Conversational in Spanish preferred.

  8. Oversee and evaluate the operations, services and personnel of the Post Grad Center (planning and execution of programs, scheduling of college admissions reps, processing of college applications and scholarship applications, school profile, senior class statistics and other duties as needed.
  9. Manage the PSAT and ACT State Mandated Exam for the school.
  10. Produce and/or revise all publications used in the Post Grad Center that are emailed or mailed to the school community.
  11. Market post grad programming, in and outside of, the district.
  12. Manage and work with NCAA and the approved course list.
